They are OK in a 5ft 100g tank Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7 ? How many do you think I could keep in there, and would I keep them in a harem or multiple males is OK?

A group of up to say 15 individuals would do well together in your tank.
Multiple males are not normally a problem in a large group, ideally though you want the females to outnumber the males.
In a large group, aggression is not normally an issue.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to keep my eye out for some variant of thorichthys

Even meeki are fun in a group. Also look at maculipinnis, aureus, mixteco and one of my favorites pasionis.

Pasionis are on the larger side at 7". I have some growing out.

The Cribroheros group, like Thorichthys is another of the central American earth eaters (formerly Astatherines) have a number of species that do well in groups (shoalers) and do well in hard water and a 100gallon. Cribroheros rostratum below

I kept mine in heavily planted tanks with a lot of current

and one that cichlidfish mentioned above Theraps lentiginosim would do well in such a tank.

Those are nice too....
I think this is exactly what I'm needing. A larger school of fish in my life. To bad I can't seem to find anything over an inch or so. Are thorichthys slow growers? Anyone ever order from wet spot?

Thorichthys are quite slow growing.
As you are used to rivulatus growth rates you may not think so.

Wet spot is as good a vendor as there is, I would not hesitate to order from them again. I can't say enough good things about them.

X2 on this. Very peaceful eartheater cichlids. They do best in groups. I regret buying single specimens opposed to a group. They also work well with thorichthys IME. In fact I am in the process of turning my 150g into a NA/CA eartheater tank. Sand is very important when keeping these species. They spend all day sifting.
