Opening a fish store in Indiana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Make sure you hire people who KNOW ABOUT FISH.

I just went into my LFS yesterday, and taught the lady about how they need not be feeding their puffers other fish.....and she actually said "Thanks for the advice, we don't know much about them" so I went into a tirade about care for the puffer, sizes (these were a few Mbu puffer in a 30g....) and stuff like that.

But yeah, that's the number one thing you need to have in a fish store. That way at least you can educate the people when selling them a fish.

Get to know your customers too. Repeat customers will bring more customers.

Are you looking to buy sheets of acrylic? If so, Meyer Plastics in Indianapolis supplies all of the acrylic in the surrounding cities and parts of Ohio. I just bought a couple pieces of scrap material off of them a couple of days ago. (It's right next door to where I work.) :D

Let us know when it opens. Most of my family is in Fort Wayne, so I am up there a couple of times a year. I usually check out the pet store by Maplecrest, cause they usually have a decent selection.

That is the name of the company that I was thinking of. Thanks JD_MAN.

yes i was, the one right across from wal-mart.. i love that place!!! i go there at LEAST 3-4 times a week.. & i live super close as well.

Very cool. You'd never think some of us were so close. Now we can add another person to our tour route. You better get some tanks going.:D

That is a decent fish shop. The fish manager seems to be ~ok on her fish too. They will buy local, but only want to give out credit.

I would definitely show patronage if I make it up there.

premium aquatics carries acrylic fairly often and they order any on request. located in beech grove.

Make sure you build or get at least 1 big (huge) display tank. I'm always paying more attention to what's in the tanks if the first impression is a good one. (it sounds like that's what you're after, and you're totally correct thinking that).

Sounds great! I would suggest to make it as clean and streamlined as possible. I would try to make most of my things match, because first impressions are generally what sells.

"The Pet Place" over off of Emerson is a pretty cool place, although I have only been in there once. I was stuck with a friend looking at the dogs and other furry animals for a while.

It's nice too see some of the other people in the Indy area pop up on here!

I used to live right down the street from there. I like that place too. I think I might stop by there this afternoon actually. I haven't been over there in a while. Gotta see how those baby Jags are doing.
