Okay, so, I mad a thread not too long ago about a new ghost knife I had. Then my bloody bichir managed to eat it :\. And I thought it was big enough too *sigh*

So, now I'm wondering which of these two species I should go for. Its a 75 gallon planted tank.

African Ghost Knife: I've kept these before and have had success with the fish themselves. Its also know of a place where I can get them at a size that my bichir leaves alone. Only thing with this option though is that these are only a brown color and are not as interesting in body type and all as a black ghost knife.

Black Ghost Knife: Very interesting and unique fish, has an interesting demeanor and ways of locomotion. Difficult to find at larger sizes though, and even when found, tend to be relatively pricey. I might know a place that has a big one (like 8"+ kinda big), and they want $60 for it (not exactly cheap). Its plenty big to be with my bichir, but is it too big to be in a planted 75 gallon tank, and will it become an issue with my smaller pearl gourami and angels that are still growing? (I have to get a good look at the size of the head on that thing)

Other thing to note is that both of these are in different stores that are in opposite directions from me. Another thing to note as well, is that I have a friend whom is wanting to buy me a fish as a late christmas present. Now, me being me and my friend being persistent, she has agreed to bring me to a place and get a certian value of fish for me. If I did the BGK, I'd split the bill with her most likely, but if I did the african ghost knife, I might get to pick up some more angels as well.

What would you guys do? Cool larger fish, or go with what you know will work and avoid the risk and hassle?

Both fish are good choices. If you're worried about the size of a BGK, they grow very slow after the 6" mark. A 75g would be fine for them. If you think it might be an issue with mobility due to how much plants you have, they like it be hidden, so they would probably enjoy it. ABKs are great too. They don't get as big and are more docile. If you're solely looking at appearance, then the BGK wins most votes, but there's something about ABKs reminds me of a puppy that I like.

My choice: ABK

^ then can you ask the store with the 8" BGK if they can ship it to me? I've been waiting for one about that size :-)
Ben was supposed to find me one in LA (Land of All fish Deals), but isn't very dependable. he won't bring me dinner either.

Haha...been trying to avoid LFS to save money:p

it's OK Ben. I can keep on living with this broken heart and the sting of regret, just as I have ever since 1978 when I sold the pet I raised because I was poor, broke, and struggling to survive down in OC.
Every little fragile baby I buy from Pet Dumb and Pet DoDo have been ill & die within a week.
No worries. it's only love & tragedy.

I don't think they would ship it sadly lol. If anyone in the NY area knows Fishtown USA, that thing was there last I check, which was almost two weeks ago.

My only concern with the BGK is that it is hard to find one that isn't too small for my purposes. I might just get the AGK (I've had before and they are cool fish) or I might just wait to get a BGK, since I still want to get more angel fish as well. I'm also working out a thing with someone who is looking to give away some T. elliots.....and being a planted cichlid fan I must have them lol

Question: I'm assuming it would be a bad idea to have both in the tank right? I know that having multiple BGK in a tank is difficult (though not unheard of since there have been those random breeding cases that have popped up every now and then) and I've heard mixed things about having multiple ABK in the same tank, and I know that a big part of the reason that knife fish are rarely kept together is due to criss crossing electrical fields, but I do wonder if the two would mind each other or whatnot.

Trying to see if I can get away with both, cause I do like both species and I suck at choosing things XD.

if you are talking about Xenomystus nigri/African Brown Knife Fish, it is not electrical like black ghosts. but you'd eventually need about twice the tank space to keep them together.

so theoretically, in a larger tank, it would be possible?
whelp, that'll be years down the road lol

back to my original dilemma :P
