Opinion Thread: Are Fish-Specific Websites and Blogs Good for the Hobby?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well this one is.
in my opinion only some of them are. Only websites with a strong history, background, etc of providing accurate and precise information( written by a expert and/or experienced aquarist) are good for the hobby. During my time doing research on different fish, i have stumbled upon numerous websites, some of which did provide inaccurate information like providing a 55 gallon tank for a single adult oscar, a 75 gallon for tinfoil barbs, etc. These websites have led many new fish keepers astray and are NOT good for the hobby.

I agree; some of these websites have ridiculous ideas for stocking and tank sizes. I mean, it's where I got the infamous "Green Terror in a 55-gallon" idea, lol.

There's both good and bad content out there. If I was a complete newbie just coming into the hobby I think the amount of stuff out there would be a bit overwhelming at times.

But the fact I'm not a newbie, and too long in the tooth to believe any old drivel anyway, means I can take information with a pinch of salt. At times basic common sense will also steer you in the right direction.

I'm experiencing the good the bad and the evil lol. Friday I was called dismissive on a forum lol. I will not name the forum. I stated my opinion on not trusting store furniture over a stand made for an aquarium. I normally don't let anyone on a forum get to me unfortunately this did. I agree with S SilverArowanaBoi about the stocking and tank sizes. I'm now convinced that Monsterfishkeepers is my favorite forum hands down. Not just saying this because of my time here.

I frequent a few facebook cichlid websites to check things out. (Cich-addicts for example)
I'd be happy if 50% of the info people post would be even close to being accurate.
Sadly I find most do not come even remotely that close 50%.

And because there is no barometer of true experience, this allows complete hacks to appear to pose as experts.

Although it seems to me, most fish keepers can't handle true or accurate info.

Toms example here is another facet of online info, a frustrating one too at times, as Tom alludes to.

Reading an article on a website is one thing, you either believe it or you don't. You can't really question it in that format. Read it and move on. Make up your own mind whether you want to revisit that site as a viable source of information.

However, if you read something on a public forum and you're not sure about it, the facility is there for you to share your own knowledge, opinion or experience with the OP, or just downright point blank disagree with them. We've all seen those threads!

Trying to find good info online can certainly be challenging at times.

By the way Tom, I'm with you on the furniture store/aquarium stand argument, lol.

I believe most are bad the noobs read things like a O in a 55 then a year later they are here on MFK asking why there O is not eating, swimming (great for MFK numbers) but i believe it hurts the hobby a noob go's and spends on average for a 55 gallon set up between $300-$500 a month later all there fish are dead and they just give up and quit the hobby.
Also I've noticed a lot of the information is the same its almost like all those websites copy and paste the info

In the not so distant future, AI will most likely control the flow of information to all those who cannot or simply will not take the time to think for themselves. Instant gratification will never be instantaneous enough for the future masses. This hobby, and most other facets of life.

The good news is, I should be dead by then.
