I have kept bumblebees and know them well. I think you are right, I should just stick with wild color forms

could I add a steatogenys duidae or two instead of gouramis. So here is updated plan

6x discus
2x abn
4x bumblebee cats
10x diamond tetras
2x steatogenys duidae

you have a 225 why not get atleast 10 discus?they really do best the larger the group.

I hate crowded looking tanks. but please answer my question

your tank i guess...

as to your question i dont have experience with steatogenys duidae so i cant speak there. but i have experience with diamond tetra and i have to say they are VERY excellent tankmate for discus. thought the temperature required for discus isnt ideal for the diamonds they should be able to do fairly fine. i dont have any BN in my tank simply since its more of a risk than its worths nothing beats algae better than a sponge and elbow grease

Only thing I would worry about is the longterm effects of the high temps on the tetras and knifefish. The tetras are easily replaceable money wise but I don't know about the knifefish never bought one. But that being said the bumblebees should be kept in even lower temps and I had one for 5 years in with discus. One thing I would watch for though with this type of group. Don't get small tetras or they will be expensive feeders between the catfish and knifefish. :)

knifefish are generally found in warm waters and should be fine I think. but will they be discus safe?

those knifes are more on the less agressive side so i would try it but have a plan b ready incase.

The tank sounds fine except the knifefish, in my opinion either the knifefish or the discus are going to be uncomfortable in the tank together. It all depends though, not saying its impossible from what I know on knifefish that species is one of the best ideas for mixing with discus but the idea in general is hazy. The knifefish will hide A LOT and you mostly likely won't see them at all during the day for first few weeks at the least and possibly for the length of thier life. The activeness on the knifefish depends on personality really, but my biggest concern with the mix is the knifefish cruising through the tank at night. That might stress out your discus big time, or maybe not, and they also move sparaticly too(swimming fowards and backwards and doing odd flips, etc.) which may also bother the discus. And my last suggestion is get the discus at a large size or grow them out before you get the knifefish.

As for the discus, if you like the look, I would suggest getting some alenquers from Hans...they look natural and are very hardy. I have had mine in the tank with about 15 colombian tetras which are generally a no-no with discus and those guys aren't bothered by the colombians at all at feeding time(colombians are pretty fiesty eaters)and they do well for someone who was new to keeping discus.
