Boiling is out of the question. The pieces of wood are pieces of wood I can lay from one side of the tank to the other and enter the upper water column to fill in the gigantic gaps I have in that part of the tank. I am however planning a trip to the mountains of North Carolina in a couple weeks and in the past, I have found interesting pieces of wood floating or laying in the Creeks, streams, rivers and lakes. I'm trying to hold out till I go up there and see if I can bring a nice piece back. What I usually find up there is birch Mountain Laurel and rhododendron

Don't think I would use rhododendron, they supposedly are toxic and are used to get high by some people in asia, not sure I'd put them in my tank. Most hard woods are safe as long as thoroughly dead, and I like to soak them for a bit before going in the tank. Boiling is a good idea but if not possible, you can soak them in a weak bleach solution for a couple days, should kill any hitchhikers
