I set up my new 33gallon long tank last night. I LOVE this tank. Its not the 125 I originally wanted, but its still pretty great. Ill add some photos towards the end.

Currently, the fish I have that are going in there include a 3" JD and a hybrid Syno 4". I do NOT like this JD, he is an ******* and just a spaztastic fish. There is a good chance he may go back to the fish store. So Im facing two stocklist scenarios. Any thoughts?

Scenario One - Keeping the JD - Therefore, aggressive tank
Jack Dempsey
Syno Hybrid
Salvinni
Some type of dither, probably asst. barbs.
Not sure what else would else would be suitable. IF anything.

Scenario Two - JD goes back to LFS - Peaceful Comm Tank
3 German Blue Rams
3 Gold Rams (my LFS is holding the longfin variety for me)
3 Angel Rams (aka Balloon Rams, no I dont support breeding for the deformity, I just like the variety)
3 Electric Blue Rams
5-6 Corydoras
8-10 Assorted Tetras
And my BIG maybe... Gold Severum. Just one. Any thoughts on the possibility of a severum working out in here? Would be getting a 2" juvie.

I think the severum would get on absolutely fine with those fish until it hit a certain size. they do get around a foot long so I would say your tank MAY be too small. and I've kept a few over the years, whites, golds and a rotkeil. they were all pretty well mannered except one male gold that got to about 7" he developed trailers on his fins and would attack all the other fish which tbh were things like GT's and other cichlids that can stand up for themselves. if you get a mean one who grows big he will have no problem killing the rams.

I do find that Sev's tend to grow quite slow but steady. If you are feeling up for it, get the 2" severum and see how it goes. growing up with the rams will most likely make him tolerate them and not be so territorial and aggressive. if they severum gets too much you can always just rehome him. so if it was me at that size, it's worth a try.

may I add, I kept my rotkeil with smaller community fish. Appistogramma, gourami, red tail shark. everyone got on fine. so from experience I would think you should be great

i second the firemouths, savinis.i would also look into some cryptos:convict-like but less...deadly.HRP,sajicas,cutteri,etc.i think the severum would be ok for a while, but they grow tall also.i think he would look cramped over time with those tank dimensions

I have a 33 long as well. One of My Fav tanks. Is it covered? almost everything In Your first scenario would eventually leap from the tank. Rams sound like a good choice, And because of the Height of the tank It would do well As a Planted. Do You plan to add more decor, or is that it?

Three excellent points! Cover the tank, add more deco, and think about planting it more.

I'd go with the rams, although probably not that many. Add more deco to set up territories and you can probably keep two pairs with some other fish. Once they start breeding, and they will, it's going to be a lot of fun to watch them interact.

I wouldn't put the sev in it. It will be too big very soon. It's also not exactly plant friendly.

Don't like the second one...way too many rams, very stressful i imagine to have so many conspecifics around

The tank IS covered, the photo doesnt show them, but there are two glass versa tops on there. I DO plan on more decor, this was just what I had lying around extra that I thought I could put in there while I have the JD and Syno in there. Once I decide on a stocking, then Ill proceed to change it up and either plant it, or buy more fakes lol. Either way I have a lot of driftwood soaking right now.

I havent fully decided as the rams go though, I havent had ANY luck getting mine to breed in the hard water that we have here. I doubt Ill actually get that many, especially since the only place that has the Elec Blues wants 20$ a fish, but I like variety. And I hate having a tank look empty.

I love Sevs, but it was a pretty figurative idea. I plan on a bigger tank once we get moved, so I doubt he would outgrow it that quickly, but I did hear that about them being diggers.

If I went with the cichlid idea.... How many could I actually put in the tank though? I dont want it too overcrowded. I do really like the salvinni, but Im not sure about the rest size and temperment-wise.

you could maybe try 3 small growing males or females, try cryptos.or a pair of firemouths, salvinis might not work for a pair.maybe a female sal, they stay smaller.just be aware some of them can be real rough on tankmates.maybe kribs instead?

I had my severum with plants, and as I stated dwarf cichlids and other communtiy fish. Female salvini can run an entire tank, they really are super territorial.
