It's possible. The manual says to use filter bags no matter what. It wasn't until I read a few posts on here that I finally got confident enough to take my biomax out of the filter bags haha.

I'm going to buy the Fluval Biomax for my FX5. Your saying though that it has to be put in them white filter bags, not just placed in the trays? Just want to clarify this a bit.

in my FX5 each basket is filled with both Bio max and Eheim substrat pro. u don't need filter bags for the bio max. what i do is i put bio max at the bottom of the basket and then the substrat pro on top of it . i put a small handful more of bio max on top of that. i mostly use bio max in my FX 5 but i have bio max in my Eheim 2028 pro 2 as well, but, its mostly substrate pro.

you could use filter bags for everything however! this would make removing media much easier!

Using filter bags wouldn't make it any less efficient would it?

do u mean reduced flow rate?

i don't use the filter bags in my canister filters, i use one in my little aqua clear 20 on my 15 gallon. im not sure of the impact a filter bag would have on flow rate, for a canister filter.

im assuming that u might have to change or clean the bags once in awhile because they could get really gunked up and clog... but i don't know for sure because i don't have any experience with filter bags in canister filters.

its not uncommon to use filter bags in canister filters, im sure there's no real issues that a little maintenance cant handle.

maybe not a reduced flow at first, but I heard bags clog faster, I only use them for carbon, phosguard etc. no need for bags and bio media in a canister. they give you bags for the ceramic rings on HOB's mainly for ease of removal/ cleaning
