Bullheads do eat plants and snails as well. There's no fish food that bullheads refused.

I Have 9in bullhead in a pond that I have had for the last 6 or 7 years that i found in a minnow bucket at less than an inch. very cool fish fun to watch eat. I also threw a 1 in bullhead into my big tank about a week ago that i got in a scoop of minnows and have ony seen it once since but i am excited to watch it grow till it goes into the pond. I also have tadpole madtoms that i would recommend for your size tank, also very cool fish.

My bullhead is 9-10" long and will eat till he's damn near that size around. He's a complete pig. Mean too. Always picks on my american eel when the eel swims through his log...

I tried a crappie a guy gave me, it was dying when I got it. I put it in the tank with the brown bullhead and others to give it a chance. The bullhead didn't mind it until the crappie didn't move out of the way. The bullhead was not happy and sucked the crappie in up to the gills and released it. I believe the catfish thought the fish was standing it's ground and stood it's ground. The bullhead also would look at this fish like why won't you move and would nudge it out of it's way.

My yellow bullhead didn't care for the bluegills in his tank and would move towards them to make them move. It did completely accept a large warmouth with no problem.

Both of my bullheads are completely curious and will investigate you. The brown is still my favorite, he will come to the glass and rub the glass if I out my hand out. He allowed and feeding and touches.

Right now I got two bullheads in a 120 gallon native community with different species of sunfish and a couple of perch. Ones a black and the other is a brown, there both between 9-10 inches, they are very interesting fish with a lot of personality, there always on the move, but they never bother any of the other fish. The only real problem with bullheads that I've had is that they grow surprisingly fast and they are bottemless pits when it comes to food.

A few years ago I raised several brown bullhead in a 75 gallon native tank. As they grew they began to eat my snails and as the temperature went up in the summer months they destroyed my plants, uprooting them constantly.

Sorry to bring up a dead thread but i had to respond......u should try a notorus flavus or stonecat, I have had one and they have a good personality and can live in a 55g; another upside is that you can purchase them at several fishdealers that deal in native fish.

If you provide shelter for the bullhead the bullhead will more than likely be hiding out most of the time. My friend has never had any problems with keeping his bullhead with other tank mates like bluegills, and greensuns but that's just him so my guess is it may work for some but not necessarily for everyone but you won't know until you try.
