Opinions on filtration for my 150...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There is no such thing as too much filtration, so go for it. It is possible to have too much flow for certain fish, but there are ways to easily cut it down (aim outputs at each other, point them towards the walls of the tank, point them at decor, etc.). IMO when you have extra filters you need to store them somewhere, you might as well store them running on a tank.

I agree. Personally, I would rather use the extra filtration for a different tank instead of using it on one that is already adequately filtered, but I know some people like to overfilter, and I'm not saying that's a bad thing, I just wouldn't do it myself in that situation.

I agree too, but where we currently live I have no room for any more large tanks. Plus like I said, who can pass up an Fx5 full of media for $90? My next step up when we find a larger place will be a 180, and the filtration will be enough for that tank as well.

Consider your electrical cost for running 3 canister filters.

Our last few electric bills over the summer have been aroudn $75 running the a/c window unit, 2 xp4's and 2 ac110s, plus heaters. Can't imagine it will jump that much will it?

As some of you may remember, when I set up my 150, my plan was to run 2 xp4's and an AC110. Well, I ended up with the tank too close to the wall and couldn't run the AC110. So, I ended up finding a good deal on craigslist. I bought an Fx5 and Xp4 both full of media, 2 400w Hydor heaters a powerhead, syphon hose, big nets and tons and tons of plants for $165! The worst part is that the lady gave away a 135g tank a few weeks ago! Anyway, I'm thinking of running the 2 xp4's for bio and the Fx5 for polishing and let my mom use the Xp4 on her 90g. Im gonna throw the boat load of ceramic rings that came in the Fx5 into the 2 Xp4's already on the 150 and just fill the Fx5 up with polishing pads. Just wondering if you all would think this would work.

The boat load of cermaic rings sunds good.......Adding another Aqua Clear to the mix is perfect.....On all my large tanks, I have a pair Aqua Clears doing my mechanical filtration..................
