Should I just use the FX-5 on the 280g rather than going with a big sump? The FX seems like it would be much easier to service and maintain than a big sump with bio balls and all that...and should be plenty of filtration for a 280.

IMO I don't think there are any canisters that are as easy to maintain then a wet/dry. With a wet/dry all you have to do is change the filter floss every couple months and leave all the bio alone.

I agree 100% that wet/dry is the best way to go. Just pull out a tray, replace the quilt batting and slide the tray back in. PRESTO! You're done.

The FX5 is a great filter but breaking it down and cleaning is time consuming and a bit of a chore. I know because I have 3 of them. On my 265m I'm running a 55 gallon wet dry sump at 1800 gph with 2 separate bioball chambers. It would probably be enough filtration on it's own but crazy me still hooks up an FX5, an xP3 and a Emp400 HOB. :screwy: The FX5 is the biggest pain in the arse to when it comes time for maintenance.
