Opinions on this lighting system? I'd love to hear them!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
and i do wanna help

thats how come im helping you buy writing all this crap down

Am I supposed to measure in Lumens? How do I measure?

Before you said it would melt my corals but now you say it is okay is that because of the height of the tank?

Sorry but you have only confused me more.

im saying that you can hang the fixture higher or put the corals lower to not melt them

no you dont measure my lumens you just messure by mainly types of lights
led>trho>metal hailde> power compact

But there are different wattages on all of those types of lights. They don't just make one strength T5, or one strength metal halide. So the wattage must have SOMETHING to do with it, or they wouldn't make different ones!

Look, it's okay. Thanks for your help. I'm not trying to be rude, but some of the stuff you're saying doesn't make sense! Maybe it's the way you're explaining it that I don't understand. Or maybe it's the way I'm understanding what you're explaining that is the problem LOL. Sorry.

okay i get watt your saying

ok so like

if you have a 24inch tank ok ?
and you have 1 150W hailde that will be out proformed by a 4x24w t5ho okay ???

what im saying is that normaly a T5HO will outproform a metal hailde

and the higher the wattage a light goes the higher lighting it is

Hi all--

So, we upgraded from a 75 to a 180 reef a few months ago. Gradually, we have gotten everything where we wanted it to be -- a good amount of new live rock, a new sump, an extra pump, and a new protein skimmer. The corals are all softies -- mushrooms, kenya tree, various polyps. We're also in the process of switching to RO/DI -- our 55 gallon water changes are now done with RO/DI, and our auto-top off is now being filled with RO/DI. So, we're on our way to hopefully getting this tank where we want it to be!

Now on to the real question -- lighting. Currently, we still have the old four-foot light (Coralife Lunar Aqualight) hanging above the tank, which means our rock and corals can only extend four feet! It's time to upgrade -- I'd like to know anyone's opinion on the light linked below. It has a pretty high wattage due to the combination of metal halides/T5s.

So, these are my questions:

-- Is it too much light? (By this, I mean is it going to be too bright for what we're growing?) We might do something other than softies some day, but I'm not sure. depends on what corals your going to house and how many inches above the tank you will hang the fixture.

-- Does anyone have any experience with Marineland White Glove Protection/Warranty? Yes and no

-- Can anyone recommend a comparable product for around the same amount of money or less? I'd like to take a look at it! well for a decent product your still going to have to pay my advice is to swallow the bullet or try to bargin with the company itself for a deal. I like marineland but prefer Giesemann over any fixture.

-- And, lastly, what has your experience been with these MH/T5 combo systems? I have had good one's and bad one's I hate coralifes, and current there the worst, Ice cap has a new fixture with both but ice cap is so-so. Basically with this type of fixture you get what you pay for.

Please keep in mind that this is the 72" one when you're giving your thoughts, so you'll need to scroll down in the "details" to get those specs. Thanks for any comments or thoughts! :)

Thank you, mr. reef. So, the fixture will probably be suspended six to eight inches above the tank, and it is the standard twenty four inch deep 180. So, a total of 30 to 32 inches.

omg i am so freaking done

absolutely stupid lol

over and over lol

He asked me the question. I only answered it. You can be done if you'd like; your participation is completely voluntary. Thank you for the time you did give. I'm not sure what is "absolutely stupid." He said, depends on what corals your going to house and how many inches above the tank you will hang the fixture. I just answered the question in case he is too busy to read through three pages of stuff. No offense, but your systems are always pre-built, so you've never had to do what I'm doing now, or have been doing during this upgrade. You tell me that it's not watts per gallon, but then I ask if it's Lumens, and you don't answer, and then you say WPG does matter, and you just totally confused me.
