Opinions on this setup

So something like 100 gal should probably be big enough then. I'm thinking about just doing a couple of big polypropylene storage containers and turning them into sump pits and having one big pump to pump it back up.

Possible to do just a sump and no canister filter? Would just a sump alone be good enough?

And I can't find any formulas on how much area of drain I need to drain from the top of the tank 3000 gph. Any idea how many pvc pipes I would need? Maybe 1 or 2 X 3" diameter PVC pipes.....?

look around on the DIY filter forum... i can't remember the exact numbers but a 2 inch falling for 36 inchs with drain around 2400 gallons a hour... and i think a 1 1/2 in will drain 1800... to do 3000 an hour i would just put 2 x 2 inch just to make sure... and yes a sump alone as a filter will work it done right...
