Opinions please on large water changes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree matt, even with a 90% water change every week you still need to throw an extra one in from time to time to stay ahead. This why we need to test our water every month or so AFTER the water change, so we know ware our base line nitrates running at.

Proper filter/tank maintenance goes with out saying. you do not do that you should not be keeping fish.
get a pet rock, they never poop.

I just hate packing 5 gallon buckets. Some day I would like to install a continous drip. With the waste water irrigating the garden.

you do not have a python or other water changing system? never mind the sell spiel, this one or any water change system will do, and if possible siphon out a window, door or tub. and use the sestem to fill the tank.

I do 50% weekly on my tanks, drain to the back yard or floor drain, refill via hose from tap (well water) with a mix of hot & cold to proper temperature.

I have a hose off my circulation pump. That I fill a container up with. I also power wash the gravel with it. As my cichlid habitat prevents vacuuming.

why can you not vacuum the gravel?

I have been doing 50% weekly and have had no issues, but I wanted to confirm with everyone here that this was ok Thanks.

can still vacuum. suckup what poopies you can, yes?

Well yes the centralized vacuum tubes suck roughly 20,000 GPD. Which gets filter though several layers of polypads. So just stirring up the bottom gets it pulled out quickly. Most of the waste gets sucked into the filter before it hits bottom.
Reverse flow on an under gravel filter helps some what in keeping stuff suspended.
