Keep in mind, GSPs are not piscivores, they are primarily mollusk and crustacean eaters.

There is no point in feeding fish to a fish which is not by nature a piscivore, and which needs routine and frequent mollusks in the diet to control the incisor plate's growth.

Yes. He gets it as a treat not as a staple.

Unfortunately something tragic happened... I'm not sure how it happened.... THere's no fish with him anymore since this afternoon. I went to get dinner with my grandparents and I came home to feed him his snails and he was laying on the bottom. I though he was sleeping so I turned the light on in the room. He didn't move after a couple of minutes. So I put the net in to see what was wrong and he had a cut from his stomach to his anal fin on his underside. Is it possible that he cut himself on a decoration? I don't think he's going to make it... the levels are where they should be Ammonia=0 Nitrite= 0 Nitrate =between 0 and 0.5 (did a 35% water change yesterday). It wasn't overfeeding because I only feed him till he's slightly rounded and I haven't fed him since yesterday when he got the snack of Tilapia last night. There was no bones in the Tilapia because it was boneless... Did a decoration cut him? I don't' get it... I'm about 98% sure he won't last the night. He's in my Hospital Brackish tank right now and he hasn't moved... I"m so sad... What did I do wrong? None of the decorations seem like they could do it... but I wasn't there.

OMG, that's terrible!!! They're skin is very though, leathery & covered in spines. I have had difficulty cutting it with a fresh razor blade. I have heard of them splitting open from overeating but it doesn't seem to be the issue here. If you don't think any of the decor is sharp enough, I can't imagine what could of happened.

Yeah... he passed a minute ago... I don't know what happened... I took all the decorations out and I"m running panty hose over them to see if they're sharp anywhere... the only thing I can think of is that he ate something he wasn't supposed to... rock or something and when it tried to pass it sliced him open? He is known for eating things he shouldn't...

That was one really crazy puffer! Maybe he was eating all that stuff because he was feeding an alien inside of him & it finally got out.

Don't mean to joke... sorry for your loss. :(

Are yo getting another one?

I don't know... he was extremely personable... Maybe I could go with 2 Figure eight puffers instead? Just them in the 50 gallon 1.008? Same care as the Late MR. Buzzbee? they only get about 3 inches or so. Or maybe I'll go with a couple more GSP? What's your thoughts on this....

I think he ate something that punctured him from the inside out... he was an odd little chewer. I've never heard of it before and apparently neither has anyone else... I"m giving the tank a 50% water change and I'll see what I can get.

Do you have F8s available locally you could buy tomorrow? If you leave the tank for more than a day or so without fish, the bacteria will die off.

I also have Pure ammonia. It's how I keep my 2 Hospital tanks with no fish in them and fully cycled... I don't know why but some people don't have the hospital tanks cycled... doesn't that do more harm than leaving them in the cycled tank they were in. But I could probably get them Friday and dose with Ammonia between now and then and test before I get them to ensure the cycle held. I can recycle if necessary. I'm getting to be more patient with fish. Or I can borrow the 6 inch Dragon Goby I "gave" to my friend. Would Figure 8's go okay with Gobies? I think not but I'm unsure. never had Figure 8's.

Yes, I've kept them together. Look into knight gobies too--they're a blast! You could do a lot with a 50g low-end BW tank. Check out halfbeaks & Orange chromides, too. I might do a trio of F8s, to disburse aggression.

You're a much more advanced fishkeeper than I thought! :)
