Female Venustus don't have any blue coloration on the face. If you see blue on your Venustus's face, good bet it's male.

I think the pictured Venustus's color change has more to do with mood, rather than a link to hybridization.

Well he have lots of blue on face when I brought him home few weeks ago. Now much less but still visible a little bit of blue?
I am aware that this color drop can be the result of hormones or much bigger tank mates.

He probably was juiced. I've bought numerous juiced African Cichlids. The colors quickly fade, but gradually return. No apparent harm to the fish.
