Biomedia in filters convert ammonia and nitrite, to nitrate.
In other words, filters produce nitrate, and unless you clean them out regularly, will produce excess amounts of nitrate.
Just a hunch, I could be totally wrong. I tried it as it claims to remove nitrates, but I've seen no difference since using it. So, I'm thinking...

Top Polishing pad & course foam
Middle Ceramic rings
Bottom Matrix

Thoughts? Also, can anyone comment as to whether I should see an improvement in flow by shortening the distance between the canister and the intake? Thanks.

I understand that but Matrix claims to actually remove nitrate as well as ammonia and nitrite. I was sceptical because I thought that nitrate removing bacteria needed an environment completely free of oxygen to thrive, such as a nitrate reactor

I have several FX's, I love them. I just use the sponges that it comes with for mechanical, and every basket full to the brim with Biomax. Using floss or polishing pads just means opening to replace more often, pita for multi tank and filter users.
