So i have been useing black sand in my large tank. I love the way it looks and cleans up. Problem is i have two Fx5 that suck up a lot of sand. I know its going to shorten the life of my canisters. Pluse the flow in my tank is strong and pushes the sand into certian areas and exposing the tank bottom.

I want want something thats black. I know sand is the easiest to clean up but what would be the next best option?

I have bichirs,dat,aro,flag tail.

I forgot about tile. Im not into the unatural look. I was thinking if anyone has used a small sized black substraite. I know not all rock substreight is the same. Is their a size that is smaller than the generic rocks you find at LFS and sand?

Thanks for the suggestions tho.

I know you want black but I just thought I'd throw this in, last week I switch all my tanks from black sand to pool filter sand and I couldn't be happier. It looks natural, the pool sand is heavier so it doesn't get sucked up, it's just awesome.

Is there a fish safe epoxy you could use to glue the sand together? Just an idea, so you could keep what you like?

Black sponge? Maybe slate tile under the sand, so that the sand may move, but it would just expose the slate in some areas instead of the bottom of the tank. You could break the slate, so the cracks wouldn't be straight

are you using black sand or black blasting media? I use black diamond blasting media...it's a coarser sand doesn't give me the headache that using play sand used to.
