The Orange roughy has become the first commercially-fished fish species to be added to Australia's list of threatened species.

The species has been overfished in the deep waters off southern Australia and the authorities are attempting to prevent further declines by granting the fish legal protection.

Senator Ian Campbell told the Sydney Morning Herald that the Orange roughy, Hoplostethus atlanticus, would be listed as conservation dependent and the fishery was to be managed by the Australian Fisheries Management Authority.

The species lives in cold waters around 180-1800m below the water surface and is found across a wide area of the Atlantic Ocean.

It is believed to be one of the longest living fish species, and some examinations of the otoliths (earbones) of Orange roughy have suggested maximum ages of between 125-156 years.

Its longevity means that the species is very slow growing and does not reach sexual maturity for many years. As a result, it has very low resilience to fishing, because the likelihood of being caught before the fish has reproduced is statistically much higher than in other species.

Despite global concerns regarding the exploitation of the species, it remains a popular food fish, particularly in the USA where over 8000 tonnes are landed every year.

The Orange roughy, Hoplostethus atlanticus, is a member of Trachichthyidae family, which are commonly known as slimeheads. The Hoplostethus genus contains around 26 species.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAA if you think that commercially breeding tuna is the answer your nuts... u really think the millions of tonnes of tuna people across the globe eat each year is all raised commercially? no way in hell.... I dont eat any Fish or SHELLFISH products, not becuase i am necessarily a save the whales person but becuase its gross and i think im allergic, i always puke, even if it just smells like fish around.. But the ocean is die'ing and I am very happy to see the governments across the world are trying to prevent many different species form becoming extinct. I want my kids someday to be able to take me fishing when im an old man... An the rate the world is fished now... only thing left ot catch will be bouys, and lobster traps.... CATCH N RELEASE!! IS THE ANSWER... DONT EAT FISH!

sry to preach, but the poooor fish...

yea i think you are right. im not sure how much commercially raised fish can help to be honest.... would they even be able to do it with tuna?

i'm glad they are being prevented from overfishing. a fish that doesn't reach sexual maturity for 30 years shouldn't be fished IMO.

Yeah, definitely a good idea. I don't eat any fish or seafood normally, unless it's a really special occasion (once a year perhaps). Saving the ocean and environment is more important than most other things IMO because it will directly affect world populations and not just particular areas.

We farm catfish and salmon. Catfish are great for the tank or the plate. By the way some people give away their fish because they can't take care of them, I am surprised we aren't farming pacu for food.

I think that is a great thing. It's about time countries take steps to prevent a dying fishery.
