Hi there I know you get a bunch of people asking all kinds of questions about Dats and I was going through the threads and saw some info but I need some more.

As I can see it Dats are a slow growing fish that is hard to get off of live feeders unless you use frozen foods.

How slow do they grow? it looks like an inch a year but some people said they grow fast.

Are they a hardy fish?

I am getting 3 of them on wed and growing them in a 45 gallon and I hope then that they will be big enough to go in the 400 gallon with a Tiger Shovel Nose, Arowana, and 3 gars, other catfish as well.

I would just like to know a time frame and if the fish is hardy or not?

Thanks

I have a thin bar bought it at 2.5" it's now 3.5" bought it 6months ago yes they are slow growing but from what i have seen with mine is it's getting stocky so it may not be growing much in the length department but it is getting fat.

How big are the ones your are getting? It will take a looong time before they can go in the 400

they are very slow groing. and the silvers is ( at least mine ) as Dan says..fat cows, all of them. round as barrells...

For sure. It will take you at least five years for your Dats to be able to catch up in growth to be housed together with your TSN. Per avg. growth rate:
Dats growth @ 2" per year
TSN growth @ 10" per year

Your TSN will be over 36", assuming your 400 is 36" wide, by year 3 when your Dats are still 8".

What species of dats are you getting? It seems the growth rates vary alot based on the species and their current size. It took a year for my indo dat to grow from 2" - 6" and my two largest widebars grew from 3" - 7" in the last year as well, and that was without consistent power feeding. I don't have experience with thinbars or silvers, but it seems that from others' experiences they grow slower.

depending on feeding and water change. I have seen 4" datnoid grow up to 7" in a year. Constant water change (i think he changes his water 3x-4x a week), live food, beef heart and market shrimp. By the way, this was in a much larger tank. Mine, grew around 2" a year. I don't do water change as often as my friend (once a week), and I don't feed live and I only give food once in 3 days. :)

I bought some 1" ITs about a month ago and they have put on .5" since then. They officially broke the 1.5" mark when I measured them this past weekend. I've been feeding them atleast once a day (mainly bloodworms & beef heart)...sometimes twice and I do a 50% water change each week.

I'm trying to beef them up a bit to move them into a 55 gallon grow-out tank because my Ctenopoma acutirostre are growing much faster then they are.

I agree....I've seen some decent growth rate on some dats...Rkc is right; it all depends on how you keep them, give them a variety of healthy foods and make sure your water is always in good condition and you should see those guys grow...They are a very hardy fish I have come to discover during the time I have kept them.. I have had no difficulty at all...great fishes IMO.

Best of luck with yours...
