Ordinary garden hose for DIY python ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yup. I went to homedepot and spent 8$ for 50' of garden hose. So now I have a 75' total length hose to refill my tank. Winding that thing up SUCKS ARSE!

i use it all the time. although somebody here (Ash i think it was) had all her fish die from chemicals in the hose. apparently if you leave water sitting in the hose for extended periods of time it can leach chemicals into the water. dump that in your tank and you could have problems.

i always run the hose for a few seconds before putting it in the tank to flush any old water out, just to be safe.
Jose, you are correct about the leaching of chemicals, mainly lead.To add to that, if you use a Non Potable ordinary garden hose and store it with water in it bacteria will grow and multiply that can and will make a human ill. I imagine these same bacteria could very likely harm your fish. These bacteria grow even faster if the hose is stored exposed to sunlight. I have seen people learn this the hard way in my line of work operating an RV Park.
Flushing the hose before use will dramatically reduce but not eliminate the threat.
I use a Potable water hose to fill and vacuum my tanks to avoid a potential problem and I still flush the hose before using it . $.02

can somebody post pics of python attach to hose? I want to do this.

Cut off or remove connector from the end of your Python hose and install a female garden hose repair coupler available at any hardware store.

a garden hose will attach directly to the python faucet pump, no mods needed. all you really need is the faucet pump to make a 'python' kit as this contains the venturi which creates the suction. the rest is just standard garden hose parts. Python just throws in some extremely cheap plastic parts the break very easily.

I had heard of toxic leeching and bacterial action in hoses, so I use the same hose to drain and fill, effectively rinsing the hose with 60 gallons of tank water before plugging it in running tap through it. No problems so far. Just a regular Lowe's green garden hose off the bulk roll.

Here are a few shots of the DIY python. The hose is made with antimicrobial materials (the company says it protects against bacteria, mold and mildew). It's a lead free construction.

I want to manage 1 step farther than that and figure out how to make it work with a soaker hose set up but I think it would overflow back before pumping down the hose. I don't think 5 gal planted pots want 20 gals of water and im normally too preoccupied to move the hose :nilly:
