I just purchased a large (16"?) ornate about three weeks ago, so this is based on fairly limited observations...
It seems to me that my ornate's aggression (and he is aggressive!) has a lot more to do with territorial defense than attempts to get food-- in fact, he seems more aggressive to my delhezi (the second largest fish in the tank) than any of the smaller, more bite-sized inhabitants.
