Ornate Bichir Fading colors HELP

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You're not the first one with fading-color ornate and I believe you won't be the last as well. You can try posting a picture of your ornate bichir (best is before and after fading color) to see the degree of color fading of your ornate bichir.

Here is the picture of my my ornate bichir before it fades

I will post new pictures when I have a chance.

That's very intense fading which mine has never experienced before. My tank's bottom is bare as well but I don't see mine fading to such an intense degree. Perhaps it's in the genes of the ornate bichir. You can follow the suggestion by King-el and see if there's any changes.

My ornate has lightened considerably since I siphoned out all the dark grey sand and left the bottom bare (white) and so have all the other fish. I'll replace it with something soon.

I put some grey substrate in yesterday and the ornate is looking darker already...

I had a 4" ornate that was intensely dark(he was brought up in a black gravel tank)
It took 48 hrs to change to a bleeched white wash color when I added him to a pool filter sand tank(he was about 6" long).
He was in the white sand tank for almost 3 months. One month has passed since I changed the white pool filter sand to black tahiti moon.
Unfortunately, the intense colors have not returned(he is 9" long at present).

i haven't placed any dark substrate, i really like a bare bottom thank. Instead i have placed black colored paper outside the bottom tank, at the back and both sides. And the color of my ornate darkens a bit, but not as much as he was 2 months before. And i notice that their color darkens when its morning and fades a bit at night.

Here are some of their pictures. The one without light is captured during day time and the one without light is captured during night time.
