Video of my ornates fighting last night.

The male is the light colored one (just got him yesterday so he hasn't colored up yet), the darker one is the female.

might be some eggs soon

I doubt it they're very young still, only about 7.5" or so.

Very funny, looks like they are establishing dominance and neither of them wants to back down!

I doubt you'll see eggs soon, they are far too small, ornates take a long time to mature

That's what I concluded as well. After winning the scrap, the male followed the female and rested on top of her and slapped his pectoral fins in her face a bit  not sure what that was about.

Nice vid. I'm going to have to declare the male the winner since the female ran..

I agree.. I was shocked to see that the newbie was able to ward off the established bichir, but she probably got freaked out by the lights.

Thanks Axel!

I'm not sure what the GT was doing?

agressive ornates :naughty:

wow, never seen my ornate bother anybody but then again I've never tried to put another ornate with him. Hope they work it out and you don't have to seperate them.

How do you tell male from female?

How do you tell male from female?

First, they have to be mature enough... usually around 6"+ you can tell by looking at the anal fin.

The males have a wide and thick anal fin, while the females have a thin slender one. This method works for all polypterus and rope fish.

Wow, I learned something new today, thanks.:)
My ornate seems to be female and the two regular senegalus(spelling) seem to be one male, one female.
