Ornate Bichir right for me?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My ornate is fairly active, she's @ the 17" mark now. She was pretty aggressive the first week I had her(got her April 30th this year @ 13/14 inches), I believe she's what killed one of my firemouths, a couple of convicts and my ID Shark.

She's pretty picky about pellets, only eats the floating Wardley's large pellets but she LOVES chopped shrimp, squid, octopus, mussles and haddock fillets.

Since you're going to be keeping Firemouths and some other smaller fish I'd probably recommend the senegal or delhezi over the ornate.

I also have a baby albino senegal that hasn't shown any aggression what so ever. It did eat one of my plecos but that was after a different fish killed the pleco.

The senegal is a lot less picky with it's food and eats different types of pellets, freeze dried krill and everything that the ornate eats.

senegal might be a little small but i'd try a weeksii or anouther bichir around that size and $65 for a delhezi isn't to good but i don't know about in the u.k here there wourth around $40

how about a senegal and a del in the 120
is there any other nice bichir
That depends how do you define nice. Are you referring to nice as color, marking patterns, or behavior? A del and senegal are the two most active bichirs you can get. As far as pattern sometimes you can get a nice black marking delhezi but it will be hard to find. Senegal comes in albino if you're into albino fish.

nah i have never licked albinos, i mean nice as in pattern, colour, easy to care for and is quite active?
I have had lucky with delhezi, senegal, palmas polli, and weeksi being really active. As for the pattern wild caught bichirs have the best patterns but are hard to come by. Pretty much all bichirs are pretty easy to care for as long as they were introduce carnivore pellets during their youth feedings. If the bichirs are on mainly feeders then it can be tricky to get them back to pellets.

i dont wont to use feeders as they dont sell them in the UK, how would a delhezi and a senegal? also i take it they would eat each other if not the same size-ish?
