Would an Ornate Bichir (polypterus ornatipinnis) be a good Bichir for starters? Could it live in a 75 gallon tank? I want a larger Bichir 2-3 ft that can stay in a 55-75 gallon.

Any idea how many gallons? A website that sells them says they only need 50 gallons. Another says 75 gallons.

Personally, I would say 5 x 2 x 2 would be a minimum for a 2ft fish.
You could get away with smaller for growing out an Ornate, but it is going to need away more than 75 gallons.

My two sen's are only about 8" right now, in a 48x18x24 90gal...I already wish I had a bigger space for them. I can't imagine housing a full-grown ornate in something this small. MAYBE if he's in there by himself, but even then I think it would be too cramped for comfort.

u got to be joking me! the minimum tank for an ornate is a 120 gal! i think the website just wants u to get the fish... sneaky bunch. Personnally, I think an ornate wouldn't be a completely good starter bichir since it grows monsterous and it is one of the most aggresive of all bichirs! i would recommend you an albino bichir, palmas, or a senegalus bichir. Looking at ur profile picture, it already seem u already made ur decision....

Thanks. Ornates just seem to be the most attractive of all the Bichirs. I picked it becase I couldn't find a smaller secies that I liked. i want something a little more rarer than a Senegal though.
