This has probably been asked a dozen times before but what sort of things are suitable tankmates for an ornate and what really won't work.

At the mo he's in with a 13". TT eel, 10" standard plec, 7" syno cat. all get along fine. There is also a few angels in there and a couple gourami, 3x 4" clown loach and a 4" ornate catfish who's growing quite quick. Am I kidding myself thinking they might not become lunch?

He hasn't tried to eat any of these guys yet but I put that down to keeping him pretty well fed on silversides and white bait.

Cheers,
Joel.

Birchir is around 7" and growing fast. Probably an inch a monthish for the past 2 months.

Remove the pleco, not compatible with bichirs. The rest may or may not become food, all depending on the ornates hunting abilities. Clown loaches usually end up as food and anything that stays under 5" has a pretty good chance also.

Why aren't plecos an birchirs compatible? When he gets a bit bigger Il have to have a good re shuffle of the tanks..

Oh right , I thought you might say something about different water parameters etc. Surely birchir wouldn't just sit and let a pleco suck on him!? Im starting to think I may have to get the new tank going sooner than I planned..

some plecos may work with some polypterus, but the common plecos are apparently one of the most harmful to bichirs

Agreed, lose the common pleco asap.

I lost a 22" ornate to a 9" pleco from it's slime sucking.

Watch very closely, as it is a slow (not obvious attack like) death.

I have had excellent luck with housing my 16-17" ornate bichir with two similar sized male bowfins.

no tankmates until the new tank is done. After that, add more bichirs!

Ya, no plecos for any bichir tanks.
