Hopefully, this will stop soon or you may end up seeing your bichirs with ragged fins and tails from the fighting. very cool video since I've yet to see a bichir fight until now. As entertaining as it looks to see fish fights, I really hate it. I like a peaceful looking community tank with no bullies. If I wanted bully fish I would have gotten pike, channa, piranha, or flowerhorn. Return those ornates and go pick up Iori's ornates. They seem more peaceful and are just as nice looking.:D

I agree dude, up until I got my first weeksii, I hadn't seen any aggression between my bichirs. I can't wait till they settle in and stop the fighting.

The male does have ripped tail fin right now, but nothing serious.

haha I could never get rid of the ones I got! I regret selling my other collection in january a lot. :(

Thanks man, I try. I have the lil L14, an L191, an L18, and a small dull eye panaque.

Cohazard: yup they are simply establishing whos in charge and usually ends when one backs away.they'll be fine, its actually normal

They were still going at it this afternoon when I came home for lunch. Right now they're on opposite sides of the tank. I can't wait for them to cool down and accept each other.

hat was interesting, a great glimpse of raw behavior... Too bad it was going on in your tank. Something about these standoff type fights has always amazed me. I've read about blind catfish doing that sort of thing for hours on end. Good catch. Hopefully they can sort it out before that GT decides to go all in.

I feel lucky I caught it on video, but that's one video I wish I wasn't lucky to take lol

I'm still confused as to what the GT thought he was doing. He didn't hurt the ornate, and he's never shown any behavior like that towards the bichirs.

Maybe he sensed that it was their fault I turned on the tank lights and woke him up so he got a little retribution

Cool glad you enjoyed it! I've never seen it either, so I was hoping this would be something interesting to fellow bichir addicts. ;)

whoa good thing my ornates a lil girl doesnt bother noone cept the feeders

Good to hear, hopefully you never have to see this in your ornates lol but as beblonde mentioned, this is normal behavior albeit maybe not observed by many.

Cool video I never thought bichirs fought like that.

To what exactly are you reffering?

What I'm referring to is when anyone says that this is the way it is! And the only way! I've read it somewhere, or seen it twice, so this has to be so! My statement was that the behavior could be a prelude to mating! That is EXACTLY what my ornate pair (male 18"-female22") did leading up to mating on two different occasions. I know all about the leaping, and the fins spread out as he descends down to the female! Never seen it! My point is, my experience is very different than others. Which doesn't prove anybody right or wrong! But PLEASE don't speak in absolutes. Each set of conditions can be extremely variable and still lead to the same result, or NOT!;)

I based my observation on having seen dels, senegal and endi breeding behavior and on having seen numerous bichirs square off trying to establish dominance as well as talking to many other people who have seen such behavior as shown just before fighting. The stance shown is closer to the norm for fighting then mating -Anne

I would agree with your statement Anne about "squaring off to establish dominance", or what I would refer to in my ornates case as a dance to determine "are you a worthy mate". They always got aggressive before they got down to business! I also applaud your use of the phrase "closer to the norm". It allows for experiences outside the expected. That's my only real issue here, keeping the door open so we can continue expanding the parameters of what we witness!
