I have both and both stay in the open and never hide. The ornates get frightened when I approach the tank and always stay in the back corners of the tank 1 at each corner and the del swims around alot more.
If you want a more social bichir I'd suggest the dels.

I agree that the dels are more active, my has his hiding spot and sticks to it if he sees any movement around the tank. I have to toss in food, then sit and watch and when he feels it's safe he'll come out and eat. The dels start going crazy as soon as they smell the food hit the water.
You picked out a good one because alot of the captive dels markings do suck. When they are little what you see is what you get for the most part, so pick wisely. I like delhezi, because more often than not they are more active than ornates. I like ornates pattern more they are one of my favorites, they are pretty sweet looking. Endli is one of the coolest of the more common, just because of their fins, when they put them up they look like a dinosaur.Mystus Redtail;3525959; said:

i have a 125 so an ornate would be ok in my tank but i think i will go with a delhezi because of the size as well but also because i would like something thats a bit more active as well, whats a good price for a wild one? can get one from rehoboth for 55 with shipping but this seems kind of steep to me since this is more than he was going to charge for an ornate
Paid 40 for my ornate and 40 for each of my dels. But, I had to wait 2 years before a local fish store got dels. In that time I could have paid the shipping and had what I wanted.
The way I look at it is that you're planning on enjoying this fish for many years, when you divide the price by that many years or months or days, the price difference seems almost irrelevant. Like Rockbass said, go with what you like.

oh ok yeah thats what i was thinking redtail and thats def good way of thinking about it to justify getting the more expensive fish 
but yeah im going to go look at a store by me that apparently has a great selection and will see what they have if they dont have one then i will get it from rehoboth
