Ornates Aggressive?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ornates aren't very aggressive compared to other species of fish, but I would say they are the most aggressive poly.

ornates arent agressive at all. they will eat fish smaller than them. mine is a wimp lol.

Depends on a few factors, such as individual behavior and how the fish was raised.

If raised on feeders, it might nip at other fish more often, but some ornates are just like that.

I've got two ornates in my tank and for some reason the slightly larger ones can't stand it when the smaller one is near it and always bites it, but it leaves all the other bichirs and fish alone.

IME and seeing people post on here... they seem to be the most temperamental poly... if there is ever a post complaining about poly aggressiveness... 80% of the time its an ornate.

mine has a small attitude... has bitten my del before and when he goes near the ropefish they go somewhere else.

My Ornate is the meanest of the bunch... he has his own little cave and if any others come near it they get nipped!

Mine guy has to live in a nursery beacuse even my pleco kicked his butt when I tried to have him in my main tank. Hoping a couple more inches at the 1' mark he mans up and stands his ground.

the pleco was trying to eat his slimecoat... not really kick his ass

Most of the time, Plecos and Polys aren't a good combination. I've only seen Senegals and Plecos work, but I think it's because Senegals are the most active.

Ornates can be more temperamental then others, but like mentioned, it really depends. The last Poly I bought was an Ornate. I placed it in a tank that was already established with other Polys. I think because it's the newbie in the tank, it's not aggressive towards the other. I had another Ornate before that I kept in it's own tank and when I tried introducing another Poly, it didn't want anything in that tank.
