why would they be considered not real cichlids?

Nasty, deformed, gene pool polluters...
I'm strongly against hybrids of any sort, they are doing real damage to the captive bred gene pools.

Various others too, particularly African Rift Lake cichlids, and many Tetras are being hybridized too.
