Ok,i just traded my jag and red devil for 2 oscars,2 four line pictus, and a tire track eel. I was not going to take the pictus, but they were free. Anyway,i never had an eel so this is new to me. I have researched them and just wondering how important is salt? The LFS told me they add a little salt to all there tanks,im a little confused on if i need to add salt to my oscar/catfish tank? Not sure the cats would like that:)

Tire tracks are completely freshwater species. The only reason to add salt to their tank is if they are stressed out.

ok thanks,i sure do like the fella. They or getting in a realy nice Freshwater snowflake in a few days. Cant wait to see it. My Brackish water tank is having a complete cycle :( so ill have to wait a while before i get one i guess. The + side is,my mollies or having babbies mean while. Im feeding them saltwater flakes so they should make good feeders for it.
Thanks again for all your help

at my pet store in Bartlett, the only reason we add salt to all of are tanks is for stress. The fish come and go so often that they are stressed and salt keeps fish lose down.

cool thanks!!
Hay,have you had or have a tire track eel? I just droped min in last night and he is all over. Looking around, he is cool. BUT, i tried to give him frozon blood worms and he went up to it but did not eat them. What do i feed him? thanks

make sure your lid is secure. eels are really good at getting out of your tank and they can get in the return of most canister filters if there is not a guard over it.

ohhh i just thought about the canaster were the water comes out. I bet he could get in there huh. shoot, how do i cover it?.

same here

xstar,

What else is in your brackish tank? How big is it? Brackish is lots of fun. Good luck with it and with the 125.

Just want to add, and agree, to what others have said. Tire Track Eels are completely freshwater fish and you do not have to add salt to the water. Generally salt is used in pet stores to help stressed out fish, and take care of any health problems that are common (mainly ick).

It is a 55 gal with 7 mollies in it now. Mabey more :naughty: . Im using them to cycle it. It was a well cycled freshwater but im guessing i lost it when i brought it up to 1.010. Anyway, been a week and still no amonia nor nitrite. I do about 3 gal. water change about every 4 or 5 days. As soon as its cycled im getting my freshwater snowflake. It will live in there with the mollies till he eats them,in which he will be alone. When he out grows the tank,i will get a 75 or 90 gal and change it all to it. Then i will get more mollies and cycle the 55 back to brackish were i will breed the mollies for feeders. And try to bring the 75 to full salt(if the eel likes it) not sure about it. If i can get it to full salt,i will trade the freshwater eel to a real snowflake.. This will be most likely over the next year or 2. Man i have plans..
