Oscar and bass live together

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I second the warmouth, I have one and he’s very entertaining to feed, and doesn’t bother anything except minor bickering with the green severum. His mouth lives up to the name as well, when eating he puts Oscars to shame.
Honestly they kind of reminds of what you would get from combining an Oscar with a bass, allot more of a Oscar body style while retaining the bass color/pattern and face.

Yeah, I agree, kinda like an Oscar with a bass’s color and tail. Mine came to me by a fortune mistake, I ordered a red breast sunfish., but I’m glad I got the warmouth

Red breast sunfish are nice too once mature, always surprised me that they aren't more common in the hobby with their colors/patterns. I'm personally working on getting some orange spotted sunfish for a breeding project, wanting to bring them into the market since it seems like nobody sells them. Never understood why native US fish never became popular in the pet trade.

I agree, sunfish are great fish to keep and have a lot of variety like cichlids. The only thing I can think of is maybe there’s laws about keeping natives, but I’m not sure. Hope that breeding project works out, I would love to see more sunfish available.

I know atleast in South Dakota here it's legal to sell captive bred fish but not wild caught. So my plans are catching a male and 2 females so I can breed/raise my own and sell the offspring to either local fish stores or online to other breeders to hopefully bring em out into the market. It's going to be hard to say the least, they aren't a common fish, but I can find them if I look hard enough. They tend to be bullied out of breeding areas by green sunfish or juvi bluegill tho.

That would be awesome, I only know of three places online to buy natives. I’m in AZ, but I don’t know what the laws are, but I had him shipped from Florida, so figure they would know. I would like to get some pickerel and yellow perch but I’m maxed out on space right now

If ya ever get any perch I would recommend getting atleast 3-5 as they are a schooling predator. They also hunt like wolves do in the fact that they would make traps using their numbers and the tank design/decor. Very neat whatching them corral live fish into an ambush. Even had them adopt a balla shark into their school when I had 3 of em growing out in a 60g. Lol all the balla wanted was the free floating scales of the fish they took down.

That sounds awesome, I might have to see if I can make room, lol can they tolerate warmer water? The coolest the water gets is about 73 in my house if I don’t use a heater
