Neither do some posters on MFK.

The phenomenology of fish is terra incognita. Do you know what it's like to be a fish? How was this knowledge acquired? Surely they have conscious states, the precise nature of which is open to debate.

They have preferences: my Oscar "prefers" pellets to gravel

You must have some serious ammonia readings if your Oscar has Hikari's as a substrate.

New World cichlids exhibit what is often described as intelligence and personality. The claim is frequently made that they are dog-like in the way they respond to their owners. This is a large part of their appeal. It is natural to describe this behavior in terms of "likes" and "dislikes." They like some foods more than others, this tankmate more than that one. Are you maintaining that we should invent a whole new language to describe their interactions, one devoid of any reference to human affects, couched solely in terms of mechanistic or behaviorist descriptions? OP's first post was perfectly clear (though perhaps a little overwrought).

Nope i'm just suggesting that the fighting is not caused because 'Hick-Up' was nasty to 'Gerturde' last week.

(At the fishy youth club, he stole his sweets and gave him a wedgey in front of the girl's.....a group of female Convicts no doubt)

I would bet it was the BP that had the eggs and was defending them. After about 3-4 days the BP will eat them and then lay some more in another month. The eggs turn white when they are not fertlized.

My BPs would attack anything in range. I tried to chase them away with a net and they would still attack me. I ended up giving them to the LFS since I am only in the hobby for collecting and not into breeding.

Thanks to most of you.

I found Hick-Up a fantastic home one he will enjoy. He will be joining several other BP's in a nice 125 gallon aquarium. He will be around his own kind where he will have a lot of friends to hang around with.

Loads of mates for the Crimbo partying, good luck to the lil fella, tel; him from me to lay off the drink tho.
