oscar and red belly compatability

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just saw a 24" Pacu today in a 500g with a pleco that was at least 18". Bare tank, no other fish and the tank looked to small. Owner said the fish were both 5yrs old.
Pacu are notorious fin nippers as well as being territorial so keep that in mind.

hey guys :) im new here, first post, hope its in the right place, so here it goes..

i have just recently set up a 240 gallon aquarium approx 180cm by 960 cm by 55cm, i also have a 300 litre sump,..i have been cycling the tank for 4 days now, using my old tanks rocks, plants, and some of its stones and gravel, also one bag of old ceramic tubes in with a new bag, as well as one third of my 60 gallons aquariums water, is my tank ready for my fish?

today i put in some smaller fishes to help with the process, 15cm polyptrus senegalus, 11 cm syndontis eupterus, 8cm mystus, 25 cm pleco and 10cm pimelodus albicans.

would this set up have enough room to also add in my two red belly pacus ( 30 cm and 20cm ) and one tiger oscar (15cm)? when can i add these guys?? thanks :)

What are your long-term plans for your two pacu? We have two pacu in a 300 gallon bare floor undecorated tank. The tank is too small for the pacu. We are now in year three of trying to upgrade their housing. Upgrading to a large tank system is not always easy.

thanks guys , your feed back is much appreciated. I bought the two pacus when they where about 5cm, the very "knowledgeable" and "experienced" pet shop owner told me they where red belly piranhas, and seeing as though he only had two i took them both. realising only later on what they where, ive been trying for a while to source a tank that was big enough and hopefully this will do till i find a pond for them, but so far everyone seems to be getting along well, eating well, and no aggresion yet :)

if you want pacus sell your tank and get a 1000 gallon aquarium at least

I currently have 4 pacu's and an oscar in the same tank, no aggression being shown towards to oscar from the pacu, and vice versa.

Your water has next to ZERO beneficial bacteria. So I'd say no it's not ready. Have you done water tests?

The beneficial bacteria grows on the surface of your bio-media and basically any other surface in the tank. If he's using media from an established tank, he should be fine.

I currently have 4 pacu's and an oscar in the same tank, no aggression being shown towards to oscar from the pacu, and vice versa.

125 Gallon - 6 Angelfish, 4 Pacu, 3 Columbian sharks, 1 Oscar, 1 Blue Channel Cat, 1 RTC, 1 Sun Cat and 1 Florida Gar"

:duh:

OP- I think the measurements you provided for your tank are off. Are you sure you meant 960cm? That's a 31 foot tank? If it's a 240G, that tank is far too small for 2 Pacus. You will need a tank at least 5 times that size to keep them comfortably for life.

Something is seriously wrong with either your dimensions, or your volume estimation. Based on your measurements, that is a 2,500 gallon aquarium, which could almost be sufficient for life for a pacu, except for its disproportionally small height...
