As I was doing a water change he decided to smash and ram into attempting to break it. I managed to bury it in the gravel and secured the holder but that was not before the bottom half melted. Want to try the heater in the pipe method but not sure as how to do it.

Is the heater the only thing in the tank? Oscars are notorious for smashing things, and they won't stop. My 12" tiger O really enjoys tearing the air tubing off the walls and the airstone out of the gravel. I eventually stopped re-burying the airstone and he seems content with his "victory".

Buy a shielded heater and use more than two suction cup brackets to attach it to the glass if you don't want to mess with encasing it in a tube (works for me but it depends on how much your O enjoys bashing heaters I guess). Or give it something else to bash that won't break or injure the fish. Mine lives with 3 turtles in a 180, and he enjoys pushing them around the tank from time to time. The turtles just tuck and ride. Neither can harm the other so it works out.

After you solve your heater problem "lol" to prevent future assaults on the heaters try throwing 1 or 2 ping pong balls in the water. I had problems with my Oscar always destroying things... Threw a ping pong ball in the water and he attacked/played with it and left everything else alone.
