I had an Oscar in a tank by himself and he left the heater and the HOB uptake tube alone. It could be that mine was just mellow, but imo, smashing heaters is territorial driven, so you could try making sure there is enough territory for him or move it to an area not in his perceived territory. Re arranging the tank might help.
