Just recently aquired a pair of Tiger Oscars, (first time owning oscars) and I was wondering about behavior. Both are scooping the gravel substrate in their mouths and swimming to the other side of the tank to deposit it. Normally I would guess breeding behavior, preparing to have fry, but they just got in the tank. They were in a 40 tall for about 3 days (WAY TOO SMALL) I know but it was a temp. holding tank. (Water changes at least twice daily on that tank :irked:). They're now in a 75, and are doing well. I assume they're male and female because they never fight/nip at eachother but rather follow eachother around the tank all day. I would assume they're still somewhat too stressed to be breeding, but am I wrong? Any other explanation for this behavior? Just playing around?

Oscars commonly rearrange substrate and decor. I'd guess they're just settling in. I've never witnessed them rearrange substrate for the purpose of breeding; they usually just lay and fertilize eggs on a tall rock or other vertical object in the tank.

like all Cichlids. there just rearranging the substrate to mark out a terrortory. (spelling mistake i kinow. lol! always hate spelling that word)
