oscar behavior

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oscars can either be push overs or total butholes just depends... like any cichlid there personalities differ..... thats why keepers enjoy them. In any case if you keep him some of thos other fiish will be toast. People use fish like some of the ones you listed as Dithers but there kept in groups/schools not lone fish

I dont get it if you did a bunch of research you would of known that Oscars are aggressive. Cichlids for the most part are aggressive fish and very terirtorial. I am not trying to put you down but your Oscar wants territory and in a 55 that would mean more then half the tank.

not all oscars are aggresive, I've seen plenty that arn't and I don't think a 2 inch fish wants half of a 55, and its harrasing the fish everywhere in the tank, not just one half

I don't care if the neon tetra and danio are killed, its the other fish I worry about. And I used to have big schools of each, but all the other fish died in a bacterial infection in January, so I decided not to get more.

Its strange cuz oscars are supposed to be docile for the most part? Are you feeding it a lot cuz oscars are always hungry and they do get aggressive when they are hungry. Is there lots of hiding places for the other fish and any places where the oscar can claim like a cave or something.

yup there are multiple caves in the tank and only one is inhabited. The danio and the black neon tetra (who actually is alive) have been staying in them to get away from the oscar, I guess the bala's just don't realize the caves are there. And yes the oscar has been well fed so far

I'd add to your clown loach collection they like to school and if your upgrading soon keep the O and get a few more Balas so they can school. The Oscar should give chase and give up if the tank is big enough... Only do that if your upgrading ASAP.. i also would add if your not upgrading soon take the O back until u have the big tank

I've got a plan all figured out. The oscars going tomorrow. I'm picking up small clown loaches from petsmart (because they are on sale) and I'm going to get a 210 gallon tank around october.

The final inhabitants of the 210 will be

3 Bala's
2 Severum's
the school of clown loaches
1 Gold Nugget Pleco
1 Green Phantom
(possibly a Oscar, if I ever find a non aggresive one)

I've explained this plan in detail on some of my other threads and its been OK'd by multiple members.

Sounds good man! It shouldnt be too difficult to keep an O in that tank... As far as cichlids go they can be pushovers if you have the right stocking.... looks good! Also you dont need the 2 plecos unless you just like them and if thats the case, thats cool

Also good call on the petsmart sale, just grab them before the end of July... thats when it ends

Like I said I am not trying to put you down. I bought my Jag knowing thay they were aggresive but when it ate my pleco I knew I couldnt put any other fish in with it. I have a single Jag in a 120 that started out in a 55. I have also seen Oscars that are like water dogs. They are a cool fish.
