I have a 10" female albino red oscar and a 12" male red oscar. they had previously been showing signs of mating when they were in a 55g aquarium but since I upgraded to a 125g aquarium for them the male seems to be uninterested. Just a few hours ago the female was showing signs of the desire to mate but instead of lip locking with her like he was before, he now just swims away.

now obviously something is now upsetting him but I'm not sure which exactly it is.

possibility 1: tanks mates; prior to the move they were the only ones in their tank, now they have 2 red belly pacus and 2 common plecos in their with them. (the plecos will be returning to the pond on Sunday)

possibility 2: lighting; my 125g came without lighting and I haven't decided what i want to put in it. the 55 was very well lit with 4' florescent aquarium lights

possibility 3: diet; it has been 2 weeks now since a Mollie feeding due to an interruption in breeding. coincidentally (or not) the Oscars have been in the 125g for 2 weeks now.

now numbers 2 and 3 will be fixed shortly but as far as tank mates should I take the Pacus out?

Yes, I'd take the Pacus out. It's unlikely they'll get down to business with 2 Pacus in there. And if they do the resulting aggression might be a hassle to deal with. That's just my opinion though, I've never bred my Oscars.

id say just leave the pair alone in the tank without the pacus

Change of environment most likely. Give them time to adjust to the new home. If you are serious about breeding them, remove all the other fish and provide a slate for the female to lay her eggs on. Good luck.

aggreed

when ou moved the o's the pair bond probobly broke

just give em time

as above remove the pacus add a slate do a decent water change and try increasing the temp to around 27 degrees c worked for me

thanks for all the relies. I think I will take out the pacus then.

as for slate, there's already some in there holding down the new driftwood. and I can up the temp and do a water change on monday.

then we'll see how long it takes them to resume the behaviour I interupted with the move.

just a little update I fixed the diet and lighting issues and then took out the pacus.

sure enough 5 days after the pacus were removed the mating dance resumed. (and Tiny the female did not eat last night, she actually went behind some driftwood while the male ate all the shrimp and pellets) now it's only a matter of time:popcorn:
