Oscar Fish Question

Well you stated one reason why...and to me thats enough of a reason not to.
If you want to feed you africans protein rich food and enjoy seeing them get bloat or feeding you americans veggie rich food and dont want them to grow and color to their potential then please by all means mix you cichlids =)

and besides the Oscar will still grow alot more than its current size...idk what type of "african cichlid" oscarlover61898 is planning to add to his tank but it may be max size right now and as i just said the Oscar isnt. What happens when the oscar is double the size of the "african cichlid" ?
 
I think it would be ok, depends on how big the tank is..
 
It depends on the african...some haps should be ok, such as eyebiters for example, which have similar diet to the oscar and will be too big to be eaten when fullgrown.
 
yes there may be a few acceptions and if it were an eyebiter it might be fine but i would bet thats not what he is going to introduce just based on the general term "african cichlid"

I know we'll "agree to disagree" on mixing african with neotropical, but I do agree that by "African cichlid" in the OP's context, it probably does mean some random mbuna, which would be the worst option if you're mixing cichlids from both continents
 
I have mixed haps with centrals amd not had a problem i just fed high plant based proteins. Or i would get clever and feed pellets to big for the hap to eat but perfect size for the CAs

You should worry more about the Oscar than the Africans, as pound for pound, Africans are more aggressive than Oscar. A 7 inch Mbuna can easily bully a 10 inch Oscar. I had a 6 inch Chipoki locked jaw with a 10 inch Green Terror and at the end, the GT backed off. Oscar is less assertive than GT and has no chance. Even less aggressive Haps are no push around, and a 7 inch Hap can easily stands its ground against a 10 inch Oscar.
 
Oscars are not always "Punks" or any of that, they dont have the jaw structure that many of the other SA cichlids have so they lose the battle. Has your 10" oscar been a solo fish to this point? If so he owns his home and no amount of rearranging will undo that and dropping another fish in will just cause a turf war that someone will lose.
