I got a 46g tank for xmas, and I think I have a good idea of a plan for it. I'm going to keep it freshwater for awhile, so here's my plan: Get alot of guppys and hope they breed, and once I establish a good food source, get 2 or 3 Oscar fish. does this sound like a good plan?

well u could put 1 oscar in it if the tank is far back but u could i9f it was like 15"-2ft back but 2 oscars would be the max if it was far back or u could just grow them up and sell them off later on when they get 2 big but the guppys wouldent last that loang as they are greedy and will just kill them an chew them up and spit them out !

oscars get too big for that tank, they wouldnt be able to turn around in that tank or have any sort of swimming room when full grown...

I would go with some smaller cichlids. Maybe some geos or a EBJD or convicts

okay, any other fish? I will go with saltwater later, but for now, i'm keeping it fresh.

hmmmmm... maybe you could go with 4 or 5 maybe more (i dont know) yellow lab cichlids ... labidochromis caeruleus. they look cool and could fit well in that tank. then get some sort of small pleco or catfish that eats algae lol like a rubbernose pleco. that would be a good setup... anyone tell me if i am wrong but i dont think (and hope) im not lol

Oscars are great fish but they get huge. They are also messy fish so when they are kept in smaller tanks they can easily get sick from poor water conditions. Hole in the Head is very common in Oscars.

There are quite a few smaller growing Cichlids you could choose from. Firemouth, Convicts, Acara, etc, etc... or any of the Dwarf Cichlids such as Rams, Apisto, etc...

In most of North Carolina the water is pretty soft with a low to neutral PH, so SA/CA fish will be easier to keep than Africans... although there are plenty of buffer recipes to help change water parameters.

Maybe I could load it with like, 50-75 White/blue/gold Cloud Minnows..
