I don't think he's doing to good. He's getting more of the black around his body. I've been trying to get a good pic but none I've taken so far show it. I just did a huge water change almost 90% cause I didnt realize how much gunk was in the gravel. (all the old meat flaps) so not sure if that will help. Any suggestions?

ahhhh man thats not good news, do you have a smaller tank bare bottom you can use to get him out of there, or gravel vac the crap out of it, i really dont know what to say i have never had anything bit in half and survive, even typing that it sounds crazy .

i feel bad for the guy and I know my original coments may have come off like i was being a jerk but its an interesting story and if he pulls through it would be one of those miracles of life.... and if he should perish then thats the crazy thing about nature ..
im tapped out for advice truthfully i dont know what to suggest at all,,

I used a gravel vac and washed the gravel as best I could. Didn't want to wash everything completely so a little of the debris was left over but looks much cleaner.

I also got an internal water filter to lower the current, could he not be getting enough oxygen....is this something that can be seen? Not sure if the new filter is aerating as much as the old one.

if it has an aeration line could hook it up to a air pump but then it may puke air everywhere, or if not get a airstone and set it near the exhaust.. zap strap whatever

infection is nasty i dont know how it all works for fish , but my mother in law stumbled and got a relatively small scratch and it got infected i thought she was gonna loose her leg, gnarly scar, some freak infection

It's very strange that he kept on producing meat flaps. :/ That's not good, at all.

Seems like it is definitely an infection that's killing him off. :/ Very sad, given that he was doing so well.

The only thing that I can think of (this was what my friend done, once), is to crush up penicillin and dissolve it in the tank. I don't even know if this would work in this case, my friend had fish that was infected with something and was extremely desperate so she placed her fish in separate containers and sprinkled penicillin in each of those so that the fish would gulp it up. She also added actual individual smaller pieces in mixed with normal pellets later on. The fish got better in the end, but she was also doing high temps and melafix and all that, not sure what helped and what didn't.

Donno if it would work in this case but the only thing I can think of now mate. :/ Try or not try at your risk, maybe wait for a while more and see what happens perhaps.

I'm going to try penicillin to see if that works. I raised the water temp been using Melafix and salt in the aquarium.

Anybody else have any experience with a fish with an infection? Would love to hear from you.

Would be great if I can get my fish through this. He's gotten so far.

It was emphasized at the beginning that clean water is first priority with any wound, not to mention a normally lethal one.
I don't understand not doing daily vaccs w/daily water changes in this case- preferably using a bare bottom isolation tank so all waste is vacced ASAP. bacteria multiplies in dead meat flaps & enters the wound, as well as the fish's entire system.
Antibiotics don't overcome wounds' being soaked in bacteria at the same time.

low oxygen can show in labored breathing. but so do other deteriorations.
I don't know if his infection is systemic, or if PRISTINE water, with appropriate antibiotics could help anymore.

It's less that but more relevance. Obviously you won't cut up the fish you actually want to keep (right?). What we're going on about here is saving this fish that well... the OP does not want to feed it to anything or any of the sorts.

It's likely most of us fed feeders to our own fish before, and that's obviously fine.

Just... yeah. No relevance. Hence the lashing. Not because of cruelty or whatever.

Here is a picture of the Oscar this morning. Any ideas as to what is going on? I believe it is a bacterial infection or at least that is what I was told by petsmart.

Any ideas on medications? I called around and no one sells penicillin.
