Oscar has tail rot! What do I do?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Do like I've been doing with my oscar I got that was all torn up, I'm sure you've seen the thread. He's doing much better now, just do daily water changes + melafix + pimafix + aquarium salt daily. This works great :)

Hell, I am totally lost now! I thought that I was NOT supposed to do a water change until the 7th day of giving him the melafix. The bottle states to do a 25% water change on the 7th day. As for the salt (which I have never used before) it states to put in 1 tablespoon full for every 5 gallons. It says that it will not evaporate and is not filtered out, and should only be added once with every water change. So, seeing how you are adding salt daily, isnt that a bad thing? He is starting to get a little bit better today. He finally ate a cricket and some fresh bloodworms. Tail still looks like hell, but I can see some improvement. Not outta the woods yet.:(

Salts fine at 1 every 10 but 1 every 5 won't hurt you will only get rid of the salt through water changes so stick with it and on the 7th day (sound like a preacher) do your water change if it’s working stick with it

So what I am gathering from what you just said is this...........1 tablespoon every 10 gallons, but my question is not answered. Am I supposed to stick the salt in there every day?

:WHOA: NO NO sorry just the 1 dose::D

Summarise:

1 shot of salt but not table salt about 1 tablespoon per ten gallons and Melafix as per manufactures specification on the 7th day water change.

Well the salt is working for me just fine every day, my oscar is healing up great. Because I do a 50% water change, then fill it up, then do another 50%, and fill it up, vaccuming the gravel, so I get rid of the salt and essentially do a 100% water change. Works great for me, and also just add the pimafix and melafix daily, but mine have also developed ich, so I'm treating that too...:(

Ich has to be present in your tank to cause an infestation. I have read loads on it over the years people use to think itt could be bought on by tempriture fluctuation but its the stress of temperature swings that brings it on.If the fish is stressed its immune system is down so it gets it. the fish can do fine with a few Ichthyophthirius in the water, but when they are stressed by anything, like questionable water quality brought on by temperaatur fluctuation it comes on. As it happens aquarium salt once again good old salt reduces the osmotic stress on the fish caused by the invading organisms, and may adversely affect the organism as well. As I said before “Salt lessens the number of pathogens in the water. For example very few, perhaps only one or two groups, of freshwater bacteria tolerate aquarium salt well” Its just the pore little fellow has has such a stress full time with having his head kicked in huge water changes I would get a kit to check the salt levels in the water as also Fluctuating pH values causes this problem also. your are right as It is important to keep track of the salt going into your tank because salt does not evaporate and is not removed with activated carbon. It is removed only with water changes To keep the salt at the desired level, when you do a partial water change, you must salt the new water to the same concentration as the tank water. For example, if you remove 10 gallons of water you will need to add 30 teaspoons of salt to the change water to keep the tank at 0.3%. thats if you want to keep salt levels up in the tank.

I also found out about using the python and how I was ****ing up by holding it below the water when refilling my tank...I guess when you hold it above the water, the atmosphere takes some of the chlorine and sulfur out of the water, but when it is below the water it goes straight in. I bet that's how my ich got started too...
