Alright as you all know i have 2 oscars. Well i noticed that Castor ( Tiger Oscar) is getting white around his dorsal fin, and also on his side fins, its not ick, and it isnt fuzzy looking like a fungus, so could it be finrot? I dont see how as i am doing the scheduled water changes, once a week, and the Ammonia is measuring at about .25, or second bar on test strip, it says ideal. He eats still and chases Pollux and the sharks around still, just wondering if it is life-threatning to him, couldnt live with out my Oscars, i certainly wont eat live fish!

fin rot

Do a large water change and replace carbon or whatever you are filtering with. Is the other oscar nipping at his fins at all? Dechlorinate your water if your aren't already. Prime is the way to go.

Are you sure you are reading your ammonia right? It should be zero if the tank is cycled. How about nirtrite and nitrate? It very well could be fin rot, got any pictures?

I just changed out the carbon the this morning, and i did a 25% change then also, the fins arent rotting away or any visible damage, besides the white. I always use my Dechlorinater and the Oscar does nip at fins, doesnt scratch or rub against anyhting either? Dang just saw him down 3 rosy reds in about 2 seconds, so he is eating the same. Could it just be growth hormones or something like that?

What is the best medicine for fin-rot then, if you guys think that is what it is?

I used melafix when my oscars got fin rot. It worked really fast. Don't forget to remove the carbon from the filter though. You can throw in some stress coat too.

try pimafix
