Oscar ich help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I will do a strong saltwater dip on a fish that bad.
OK I've never actually let one get that bad. . . .poor fish.

If your tank won't go hotter you can insulate the top with folded towels or scrap styrofoam. That will help it warm up.
If you have a canister or sump you can do the same. Costs nothing.
Most of the heat lost goes straight up.
Salt dip won’t treat what’s in the tank. Gotta treat the fish and tank.

. . . I use 3lbs per 100 gallons (or slightly more to achieve a salinity of 3ppt) your beneficial bacteria are only harmed if salinity goes over 6ppt.

Yeah, they will die off somewhat. I'm putting nearly 15 lbs sea salt per 100 gals (~15ppt) in my brackish tank. Some BB did die off when I started, but not all.

I'd do that strength as a dip: about 2 oz in a gallon of warm tankwater which is about half the strength of seawater. A couple minutes will do it. Don't let the fish become too distressed before you put him back.

I was medicating even before it got that bad. I started medicating at one or two spots but somehow it has just exploded. And i will put some instalation foam overtop to kee the heat in

I don't think that medication can cure Ich. I also use Nox-Ich, which is just a little malachite green in saltwater. It can turn your silicone green though and will kill your snails and shrimp etc.

Dip are almost useless, because the ick on the fish, is protected by the fishes own slime coat, you must treat the entire tank, for up to almost 2 weeks to get them all.

The dip may not be about the Ich precisely. It may be in consideration of secondary infections also present in any dirty tank.
I never studied if it really makes a difference. This is just what I was told to do back in the stone age.

Change the water,
Raise the temp above 86F
Add salt (or nox-ich)
Dip any really sick fish.

Agreed. Treat entire tank with salt per Duanes. I treated community tank with new oscars. I also raised temp to 86-87 range. Should see results in 4-5 days. Should be complete in 1.5 - 2 weeks. Continue water changes and replenish salt during treatment. Do not treat for less than 1.5 weeks.

I have been adding salt and doing daily water water changes. I have medication arriving tomorrow(tuesday), can i medicate and continue adding salt?

Would do salt or meds not both.
