I have seen adult oscars in 75 gallons and when common sence is used, that is to small. I recommend a tank 5 feet long, 18" wide and 24" tall. No way will a 55 hold one for life, thats just animal cruelty.

Oscars can easily get 12" long(if taken care of properly) and can sometimes reach 14+ inches long. At 12" the fish is 1/4 the length of the tank. That tank legth too fish legth ratio is to much IMO. That's why I recommend a five foot tank.
I sold him back to the pet store today anyways, If I would have gotten the original tank my uncle was 'suppose' to hang onto for me then I would have kept him but some people are just jerks and money talks. I got two glass ghost cat fish instead...nothing close to an oscar but it wont take as many water changes i guess
