Oscar in planted tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My oscars pick up 2-3" river rock and make mountains on the ends of the tank. Then take the pea gravel beneeth and put that on top of the mountains.

Once a week I take it down and by weeks end they out them back. I couldn't imagine what they would do with plants. And god help me if they both decide to move my hokey rock at the same time.

Mike

I have had my Oscar for 7 years and I have tried many set ups in that time. I have tried plants several times and this last time it has lasted the longest. Going on three months of 1 13" Oscar in a planted 75 gallon tank. As I am typing this she is up to no good thrusting around her tank, knocking over drift wood but no bother to the plants.
Plants are:
Amazon swords(sm,lg)
Brazil sword(med)
chain sword
crypts
Indian weed
and rotola

I know young Oscars will test their limits and rearrange things. Old Oscars will do what they want. Try it but make sure you get larger plants with a good root system pre tank.

That is a lovely tank. Thanks for posting the picture. I would love to have one corner densely planted like that and the rest with driftwood, stones and lots of swimming space. Yeah, I might get myself a couple of baby oscars and try my luck.

Its not as bad as every one say it is !! I have a heavily planted tank with a Tiger Oscar !! dude Just protect the roots with 1 to 2 kilogram pieces of rock , even the mighty Oscar cant move Big rocks !! and try the plants with broad leaves such as Java ferns the Oscars will leaves them alone since they aren't palatable .

Just cause. Water level is low due to just installing my new fx5.

I used large rocks and tied Java moss, Java fern and anubias to them along with a huge piece of driftwood. Left plenty of room in the front and along the back for swimming. Have a ton of watersrite floating and amazon swords..WELL ROOTED....oscars have yet to show interest. Next week could b a giant salad..so far so good

Every Oscar I've ever had rips the plants out! Do 2 tanks!
