Oscar injury

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have had good luck with Stressguard by Seachem. It coats the fish and reduces stress. It also contains antimicrobial agents to prevent infection, unlike other stress treatments. It won't clog up your filter either. I use it alone, or in tandem with Paragard if I see signs of illness / infection.

Poor guy. Hopefully he's on the mend soon.

Melafix contains Melaleuca cajuputi oil, that's why I posted the first study.

Personally, I avoid it like the plague. Some years ago I dosed it and I found some of my corydoras dead the next morning.

My fish get clean water for fish would and scrapes, never had an issue with that :)

Well today my Oscar basically ripped his own forehead off on the center brace of the tank. Not sure if he thought he seen food or what. I’ve treated injuries in the past with daily water changes but nothing this bad. He has a deep gouge that goes across his entire forehead from just above his eyes all the way to his dorsal fin. Any tips besides daily water changes to get him to heal up the best he can?

My Brick tore a one inch slash in his side when he was around 6". It was literally flapping off his body when he swam. Kept the water clean and it healed up in a week cleanly. I also used a double dose of Stress Coat for each W/C.

Water changes... I bet it will heal in 2-3 weeks with pristine water. The current in my Jag's tank was trapping food behind my filter intake/outtake hoses. My Jag was trying to get the food which resulted in him tearing a piece of flesh off his forehead (3-4 cm by 1 cm and it looked deep). I was really upset at first, did a huge water change, another one three days later... it's been less than a week and it's almost unnoticeable now. Their ability to heal is nothing less than amazing.
