folks say you can tell by comparing vent to anus, female have a larger vent, I do not proscribe to this. only way to tell is when they spawn. I am sorry for your loss, chances of just getting another female to replace are pretty slim but always a chance,, GL!!

What size tank they in?

ohh, oscars are really hard to vent. so, must have two oscars to differentiate it?

That sucks sorry for your loss. Over the years I've learned any fish can jump out of a full tank, I would get a lid.

Sorry for the loss. Probably went after some bug flying around the tank. Wouldn't hurt to put a little weight on the lids as well just as a little extra precaution
